Did you watch the film “An Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore during his presidential run in America? Did it shock you and made you aware of the urgency of “Climate Change”?
Do you ever wonder why all the precautions we take for the environment are not producing much results? Why are our greenhouse emissions not coming down? What could be the largest cause of environmental degradation? How can we live more sustainably?
Even though I knew a lot of this information already, it blew my mind to watch all the facts and information put together so well in this film by a young man who really cares. Is that what we are missing in our lives as inheritors and caretakers of this planet? Caring? Are we so blinded by greed, profitability and the rat race that we are closing our eyes to the obvious truth that is staring at us?
Unfortunately, this is exactly what the film proves we are doing, including the environmental agencies who are supposed to protect the environment. They too are motivated by greed and fearful of the big meat and dairy corporations and hiding the information that they should be sharing with the public. Even worse, many of them are not even aware! I found this absolutely shocking.
Through various comparative stats, it comes though that animal agriculture or raising animals for meat, eggs and dairy is the No.1 cause of environmental decimation. Much more that all the planes, trains, cars, bikes, buses and ships all put together! Greenhouse gas emissions by all transportation is 13% and that by animal agriculture is 51%. Yet, nobody is telling us these facts.
This is because previous activists have got into trouble with the rich corporations and even been killed for revealing the truth. The meat and dairy industries are very powerful and would do anything to protect their profitability. This is not true just for America but all across the world.
In India we have the largest population of cattle in the world due to our thirst for dairy i.e. milk, paneer, curd, ghee, butter etc. Cattle emit harmful methane gas through their digestive process which is the leading cause of greenhouse emissions. Due to such a high population, once the cows are past the milking cycle, they are sold and slaughtered for beef. All this in a land which pretends to revere it’s “holy” cows.
